Quick start walkthrough — secure hardware wallet setup

Welcome & Overview

This presentation guides you step-by-step through unpacking, connecting, and securely initializing a Trezor® hardware wallet. Follow each slide to complete setup confidently — from physical checks to recovery seed management and first transactions.

Unpacking & Safety

Physical inspection

Inspect the box seal and tamper-evident elements. Confirm device model and packaging integrity. Never use a device that appears opened or damaged.

What to verify

  • Factory seal intact
  • Model number matches purchase
  • No foreign materials or scratches

Connecting Your Trezor

Hardware & cables

Connect the device to your computer using the supplied USB cable. For mobile, use USB-C or an OTG adapter as appropriate. Allow permission prompts on your host device.

Tips for connection

  • Use the original cable for reliability
  • Prefer a direct USB port over hubs
  • Keep device screen visible during setup

Software — Trezor Suite & Web Start

Choose your host application

You can initialize via Trezor Suite (desktop app) or through the secure web start at Trezor.io/Start®. Both guide you through firmware checks and device initialization.

Security first

  • Always verify the domain: trezor.io
  • Check firmware signatures when prompted
  • Never enter seed words into a computer

Initializing the Device

New device vs. recovered device

Select Create a new wallet for a brand-new setup or Recover wallet to restore from an existing recovery seed. New device flows generate a fresh seed on-device.

On-device actions

  • Follow prompts on the Trezor screen
  • Confirm random entropy and press buttons
  • Set a PIN when asked — this protects the device if stolen

PIN & Passphrase

Choosing a secure PIN

Pick a PIN that you can remember but others cannot guess. The PIN is required every time the Trezor is connected and unlocks access to accounts.

Optional: Passphrase (advanced)

A passphrase acts as a 25th word added to your recovery seed. Use it only if you understand the risks and backup implications — losing the passphrase means losing access.

Recovery Seed: The Single Most Important Step

Write it down, offline

The device displays a recovery seed (mnemonic words). Write these words on the supplied recovery card or a secure, offline medium. This seed is the master backup for your funds.

Storage best practices

  • Never photograph or store the seed digitally
  • Keep multiple secure copies in separate locations
  • Consider steel backups for fire/flood resistance

Verifying & Finalizing Setup

Confirm seed & firmware

The host app will ask you to confirm a subset of seed words to ensure you recorded them correctly. Confirm firmware fingerprints and complete any additional software verification steps.

Test with a small transaction

Before moving large amounts, send a small test transaction to and from the device to confirm end-to-end functionality.

Day-to-Day Use & Updates

Regular maintenance

Check for firmware updates via Trezor Suite and install only when you can verify authenticity. Always use the official channels and keep your recovery information secure.

When to contact support

  • Device is unresponsive or shows tamper signs
  • You lost your recovery seed and need guidance
  • Suspected compromise or unusual behavior
